Three outfits inspired by ‘The Big Three’ gods of Greek mythology.

Hi everyone, and welcome to our newest series, which will cover fashion inspired by Greek Mythology! I’ve been passionate about Greek mythology since childhood, and I love translating myths into everyday fashion. In this article and those to come, you’ll find all the Greek myth fashion you could want, with outfits inspired by gods, goddesses, heroes, and creatures from Greek mythology.

I hope you’re as excited as I am to explore the tales of Ancient Greece, and pick up a few style ideas along the way!

Greek Mythology 101

  • In Greek mythology, the primordial gods created the world. Gaia (goddess of the Earth) and Uranus (god of the sky) gave birth to the Titans.
  • The Titans ruled the world until they were overthrown by the Olympians (the twelve gods we know and love).
  • The Olympian gods lived on Mount Olympus, which you can visit if you make a trip to Greece
  • After defeating the Titans, brothers Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades drew straws to divide the world between them. Zeus drew the longest straw and became king of the gods, and ruler of the sky. Poseidon became the ruler of the seas. And Hades drew the shortest straw, receiving the Underworld.

As a tribute to the main divine rulers of Ancient Greece, in this article I will show you three outfits inspired by Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades.

Zeus – Ruler of Mount Olympus, and God of the Sky

Zeus is not only the king of gods, but also the god of the sky, of thunder and lightning, law and order, justice, and kingship. Although he is married to Hera, he is infamous for many love affairs which created a large and complicated family tree.

Products: Shirt, Skirt, Earrings, Sandals, Lipstick

For an outfit inspired by the patron of heavens, pair a navy skirt (similar to the color of a night sky) with a scalloped-collar shirt (I always associate this shape with clouds), and you’re ready for your office internship! Lightning bolts are Zeus’ weapon of choice, so they make very appropriate accessories. Add more elegance to the outfit by wearing black sandals with a golden trim at the heel. To finish off the look, I chose lipstick in a shade called Unfaithful, to reflect Zeus’ problematic love life.

Poseidon – God of the Sea

Poseidon is the god of the sea, and the bringer of earthquakes and storms. He is also considered to be the tamer of horses (or their creator, in some myths).

Products: Skirt, Top, Bracelet, Bag, Sunglasses, Necklace, Sandals

In this Poseidon-inspired look, a teal maxi skirt (reminiscent of the sea), and a white off-the-shoulder top are perfect for your next summer outing, whether you’re going to a music festival or just being a tourist in your own city. Accessorize with a coral shell necklace, a pair of sunglasses, and a horseshoe bracelet in honor of Poseidon’s animal symbol. Finally, add a cross-body bag and some comfy wedge sandals.

Hades – God of the Underworld

Hades is the ruler of the Underworld and the god of the dead. And because most precious minerals are found underground, he is also the god of riches.

Fun fact: because of his permanent residence in the Underworld, Hades is often not considered one of the twelve Olympians, as he never visits Mount Olympus. Actually, that’s not a fun fact, it’s quite sad. I’m sorry, Hades, you deserve more recognition.

Products: Dress, Heels, Earrings, Cuff

To channel the god of the Underworld, wear a little black dress with a twist: a lace floral back (Hades is married to Persephone, the goddess of spring). To symbolize earth’s riches, choose golden jewelry like a filigree cuff and earrings. I’ve picked earrings that resemble coins because in Greek mythology the dead need to pay for passage into the Underworld on the river Styx. Last but not least, put on black heels, and it’s time to party!
