Queen B is elegant and classic… even on a budget!

Brenda is in my Intro to Fashion Design class at Columbus College of Art and Design. What I love about seeing Brenda every day is that her style is impeccably and unmistakably her own. She proves that you can feel luxurious and fashionable on a college budget.

Plus, what’s not to love about a girl who braves the winter in this kind of feminine, classic outfit? Style should be about being boldly yourself, which Brenda (in her tiara) absolutely is.

Let’s Talk Fashion

Who or what inspires your style? “I get a lot of style inspiration from different Youtubers and from stylish Instagrams. I also really like Rachel Zoe’s style at the moment. I can’t afford her luxury looks, but I try to get her same classic look on a college budget.”

Where do you like to shop? “I used to really like Forever 21, but then I realized quality is better than quantity, so I started shopping at slightly more expensive stores like Nordstrom Rack for my go-to staples, and just go to Forever 21 for some quick buys. I also shop online mostly, because a lot of my favorite brands don’t have an Ohio store, like ASOS, Missguided, and Zara. I spend more money on my staples like, my jackets… those are my babies! That way you can wear a lazy outfit, [add] a jacket, and look fabulous.”

How would you describe your sense of style? “My sense of style is classic and a little girly. I wear a lot of black and white outfits with girly elements.”

Why did you choose this particular outfit? “Today was a super busy day for me. I had to be dressed up today because I had an interview with a local magazine and they were taking pictures, then I had a big presentation for class. Regardless, it’s pretty much an outfit I’d wear anyway, except for the shoes. I’d probably casual it up a little bit with some flat shoes [on a normal day].”

What fashion advice would you give to other students looking to improve their style? “I really think you should always dress your best, because you never know who you will run into, especially if you’re in the fashion field. It’s always important to stick to your aesthetic. You should start with the basics and then slowly build your way up. Eventually you’ll know what feels comfortable and looks good on you, but having the classics is a must.”

What are your favorite trends right now? “Right now, I’ve been seeing a lot of fur jackets that I love for winter. [There are] a bunch of different fun styles in different colors and textures.”

What do you do for fun – do you have any unique hobbies or interests? “I love hanging out with friends. I don’t have many, but the ones that I do have are my babes. We like to go out and sew together. We can literally spend hours sewing together and we’d be fine. I also like making YouTube videos. I don’t do those often because they take a lot of time, but are so fun to make. I also have a new family member: my poodle named Poppy! He’s seven weeks old.”

If you could raid anyone’s closet, who would it be and why? “I would love [to raid] Rachel Zoe’s closet. It would just make me feel like I’ve made it in life. If I could pull it off though, I’d love Vanessa Hudgens‘s closet [as well.] I’m obsessed with her, [but] I just don’t know if I could go bohemian.”

Do you have a favorite fashion designer? “Oh, my goodness yes. I love Elie Saab and all his work. If I could ever be anyone in this world, [I] would aspire to be him. I want to design wedding dresses and he is one of the designers that inspires me because of all his intricate bead work.”

Elements of Brenda’s Outfit

1. Fur Jacket

Brenda found this perfect fur jacket at a local shop that supports local designers and classic vintage pieces. This fun, patchy outerwear is a statement piece that gives any outfit a “wow” factor. Its cropped style would be flattering on anyone.

2. Flowy Striped Pants

These cool and breezy striped pants look sophisticated and comfortable. It’s not every day you see someone rocking vertically striped pants around campus, but Brenda is inspiring me to give them a shot! They couldn’t be more adorable.
