Black is always in style.

As Christian Dior said, “You can wear black at any time. You can wear it at any age. You may wear it for almost any occasion.” If you ask me, truer words have never been spoken.

I have yet to meet someone who embodies this fashion philosophy better than Michayla. In the classes that we’ve shared over the years, she always shows up in amazing combinations of dark colors, lived-in combat boots, and her signature dark lip. Today, we ran into each other in the dorms and she was game to share her style with the CF community.

Let’s Talk Fashion

Who or what inspires your style? “Probably my music. When I was younger I listened to a lot of emo stuff, so I wore a lot of t-shirts and things like that. Now it’s still a darker tone but a little bit more mature.”

Where do you like to shop? “Thrift shops, [the] Salvation Army, but I also really like Charlotte Russe and H&M.”

How would you say your sense of style has evolved? “I’d say it’s dark but elegant. My friends would say I have a ‘corpse bride’ aesthetic. So I like a lot of lace and velvet and I really like satin. I’ve definitely been described many times as dark and witchy… or [like] something out of American Horror Story’s Coven.”

Why did you choose this particular outfit? “I just got this dress for fifteen dollars at H&M and I just like the way it makes me feel. Black makes me feel powerful, and when I feel powerful I feel comfortable, so this is just what I feel comfortable in.”

What fashion advice would you give others looking to improve their style? “Don’t spend too much money because many things can be altered slightly to make you look fantastic. Also, black is perfect for any occasion. It never goes out of style.

Personally, I dress the way I feel and I just don’t really pay attention to trends. I would dress like this [for] basically anything, regardless of what people think of me. I dress for myself, not others, and I think that’s really important. It helps me feel comfortable in social settings and if more people cared less about what other people think, they might feel better about themselves and feel better in their own skin.”

What are your favorite trends right now? “High-waisted anything! Pants, shorts, anything that accentuates your curves… and I really like that chokers are trendy right now.”

If you had an unlimited budget to spend on one fashion item what would it be? “Probably one of the outfits from one of the girls off RuPaul’s drag race. Oh my god Kim Chi! One of Kim Chi’s outfits would be amazing! If Kim Chi designed me something, I would flip out. I’m a really big fan of the show.”

What do you do for fun? Do you have any unique hobbies or interests? “I am huge into Pokémon of all facets. Pokémon Go, the Nintendo game, the anime TV show, and especially the trading card game. And I have a black cat named Knox, he definitely complements my aesthetic.”

If you could raid anyone’s closet, who would it be and why? “RuPaul’s. Definitely RuPaul’s.”

Elements of Michayla’s Outfit

1. Investment Boots + Knee-High Socks

Although combat boots can be bought for cheap just about anywhere, choosing to invest in a quality pair of boots can guarantee you years of wear. Michayla purchased her Doc Martens years ago and has worn them almost every day since then. She’s even climbed mountains in them and loves the genuine, distressed look that they get over time. Pair your boots with some winter-y knee-high socks and strut your stuff!

2. Statement Lipstick

If making a statement in all black isn’t enough for you, you can amp up your look by adding a dark lipstick. Rocking Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in the shade Ricco, Michayla isn’t afraid to turn heads.
