Fierce, fly, and funky fresh: Trevor #nailedit.

There isn’t a soul on campus who hasn’t heard of Trevor Blake. Athens’s own king of vintage (and serious fashion statements), Trevor is a fashion student, a stylist, and a designer. When I found him on campus, I couldn’t stop myself from prying for a few of his best tips and tricks.

Let’s Talk Fashion

Who or what inspires your style? “I draw a lot of inspiration from 1980s fashion just because I feel like it was a very gender-fluid time for men’s fashion.”

Where do you like to shop?
“I shop local always. I work at a vintage boutique and many of my most recent purchases come from there because #employeediscount! I also truly love Atomic in downtown Athens. Shout out to all the lovely people who work there as well!”

How would you describe your sense of style? “I often describe it as ‘rich ’80s white kid who spends daddy’s credit card on new clothes.’ A little bit of that, but also glam rock.”

Why did you choose this particular outfit? “I choose my outfits based on the energy they give me. The ultimate goal is to find an outfit that truly makes me feel like the raddest and baddest guy in the room. At the end of the day, I dress for me and only me.”

What fashion advice would you give to other students looking to improve their style?
“If anyone says anything about your outfit, take it as a compliment. Dressing has so much power that if someone is talking about what you’re wearing, that’s a great thing. After that, never worry about what anyone has to say. Express yourself how you wanna express. If you feel sexy, wear it!”

Do you have any favorite designers?
“Currently I’m enjoying any designer that pushes and defies gender norms. Gypsy Sport comes to mind. They’re a really beautiful blend of genderless sensuality and athleticism which is totally my aesthetic.”

What do you do for fun? Do you have any unique hobbies or interests?

“I truly enjoy styling. Whether it’s on the more conceptual or creative level with shoots or runway shows, or even personal styling, I really love it all.”

If you could raid anyone’s closet who would it be and why?
“I’ve always been really inspired by early ’80s and ’90s anime characters like Dragon Ball Z and classic ’80s movies like Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Also, the costuming from A Chorus Line is great, it’s like, this fabulous retro athletic wear. I also draw a lot of inspiration from Grace Jones and 1980s Eddie Murphy… I feel like I’m their surrogate child.”

Who’s your style icon?

“I don’t have one particular style icon, but a lot of bloggers I follow really inspire my style. One of those is Martin Gregory and I’m also really influenced by my colleagues at work.”

If you had $1,000 to spend on any clothing item or accessory what would it be? “Probably a really crazy pair of shoes. Probably because I can’t even afford a nice pair of Chucks right now. I would love to get to a point in my life when I can just throw a pair of thousand dollar shoes in my bag.”

Elements of Trevor’s Outfit

1. Colorful Print

Trevor is throwing it back to the ’80s with a funky printed shirt that would make even the Fresh Prince jealous. He balances those bright hues with a sleek bar choker.

2. Western Details

Western-inspired fashion is all over the runways this season! Take a hint from Trev and incorporate a staple accessory like this western belt into any outfit for instant style.

3. Monochromatic Bottoms

Business on the bottom, party on the top–err, you get what I mean. To balance your psychedelic prints and colors, keep the rest of your look sleek and simple with a pair of black jeans like Trevor’s, which are from H&M. Add a pair of black booties and you’ve got a perfectly balanced look.

We’re dying to know what you think of this look!
