Runway Looks for Less: Yeezy Spring/Summer 2017
Yeezy Season is upon us.
By now, you’ve probably heard about the controversy surrounding Kanye West’s latest Yeezy collection. Because doesn’t everything involving Kanye turn controversial? Criticism of the show – where reporters were kept in a holding pen and models stood for hours in blistering heat resulting in many collapsing or having to sit down – eclipsed the show itself.
Kanye is no stranger to criticism, responding to the backlash in typical Kanye fashion. Many family members and friends, like Kylie Jenner and Jonathan Cheban stood up for him and his show.
Regardless of what side of the debate you’re on, the commentary has become bigger than the clothes. So, what were they actually like? Basically, like many of the other Yeezy shows, there was a lot of nude, and a lot of stocking-esque bodysuit things. Basically, a lot of things that you’d think were completely impractical to wear. He also debuted some new footwear, including thigh-high perspex boots. I know, I’ve been looking for a pair for years, too!
Joking aside, West’s collections are always divisive. Some think they’re genius, others think they’re pointless. The main negative is the price – a plain white t-shirt from one of his collections would set you back $120. And that’s where I’m here to help! What I like about Kanye’s collections is that, although some of the pieces are a bit zany, the looks are all relatively simple. This one, for example, is just a black bodycon dress, some thigh high grey boots, and a necklace. These boots are heeled, but I chose a flat pair as they’re more practical and more daytime-appropriate. You could totally swap them for a heeled pair for evenings, though!

Look 2
This is one of my favorite looks from the collection, purely because I love coats and I can picture myself sitting in the back of a classroom in December when it’s freezing cold wearing this one like a duvet. For this outfit, I paired a zip-up jumpsuit with an oversized coat and some lace-up boots, combining three very on-trend items. Kanye knows his stuff.

Here are those thigh-high perspex boots I was talking about. On one hand, I love them, on the other, I can’t stop thinking about how hot and sweaty your feet would get in them – sorry, that was gross.
Anyway, I predict there’ll probably be many knockoff versions of these boots in the future, and if I’m honest, even if those did exist now, I probably still wouldn’t have included them. I went with perspex ankle boots instead, which are very on-trend right now (and a million times more versatile), paired with a knitted mini dress and a pendant necklace.
