You can even wear them in winter!

As warm summer temperatures give way to cooler fall weather, it’s tempting to bid farewell to your summer staples. But that doesn’t have to be the case! Enter: fall shorts

Below, I’ll explain what exactly fall shorts are, plus how you can style my current favorite pair from Zara both now and in winter.

What Are Fall Shorts?

(And how are they different from regular old summer shorts?)

Typically made of thicker, sturdier materials and darker colors than summer pairs, fall shorts are made specifically for cooler temperatures. They’re the perfect way to transition your wardrobe into Fall, while still holding onto the last vestiges of summer.

Furthermore, the particular pair from Zara that I’ve chosen for this article can be styled just like a mini skirt, so it’s super easy to figure out how to wear them.

Below, see my ideas for how to style these ruffled plaid shorts for late Summer, Fall, and into early winter.

Fall Shorts: How to Wear Them Now

Products: T-Shirt – Adidas, Ring – Saks Off 5th, Sunglasses – Saks Off 5th, Mules – Gap, Shorts – Zara, Jacket – Topshop, Backpack – CHARLES & KEITH

This slightly edgy and very trendy fall shorts outfit is just right for wearing at the end of summer and into fall, when temperatures are fickle so you want to stay warm, but you don’t want to be overdressed.

Start by pairing a borrowed-from-the-boys Adidas logo t-shirt with the shorts, being sure to do a half-tuck to show off the ruffles at the front of the shorts. Next, play with proportions by throwing on an oversized cropped black denim jacket. You can tie it around your waist if the weather gets warmer.

Slip into a pair of stylish loafer mules, and grab a black (faux) leather backpack that’d be perfect for storing all of your class essentials, should you choose to wear this outfit to school. Lastly, accessorize with chic ombré sunglasses and a cool pearl ring.

Fall Shorts: How to Wear them in Winter

Products: Blouse – Nordstrom, Camisole – Uniqlo, Shorts – Zara, Tights – Gap, Ankle Boots – Zara, Coat – Zara, Earrings – Zappos, Scarf – Mango, Nail Polish – Essie, Hat – Saks Off 5th, Ring – Shopbop, Bag – Target

Put-together yet relaxed, this cozy fall shorts look shows that wearing classic pieces doesn’t have to be boring!

Begin by layering a sheer feminine black blouse over a black cami to provide just the right amount of coverage. (Bonus: this camisole is from Uniqlo, and features their HEATTECH technology, ensuring that you’ll be extra-warm!); next, layer the shorts with opaque black tights for warmth.

Put on a pair of gorgeous splurge-worthy pearl-embellished ankle boots, and add a timeless camel coat for a dose of sophistication. Wrap a dark gray scarf around your neck, and add a chic wool fedora for extra style points.

As for jewelry, I’ve chosen to keep things simple by adding a pair of raspberry-shaped studs for a little pop of color, as well as a signet ring for a vintage-inspired touch.

Paint your nails a deep berry shade, and finish off the look by wearing a classic black cross-body bag.

What Do You Think of Fall Shorts?

How are you incorporating your favorite pieces into your wardrobe as the temperatures continue to drop? Do you ever wear shorts in the fall? Do you own a pair of fall shorts? Is your style more edgy or more classic?
