3 Cute Outfits for Fall That Aren't #Basic
Consider this your intervention.
Let me start this out by saying…if #basic is your thing in the fall, my dear friend, keep doing your thing and let your basic freak flag fly. I feel you – my blood is probably at least 25% PSL at this point in October, and I’m counting down the days until it’s cold enough that I can swaddle myself in oversize sweaters and flannels.
And yet…
Despite fall being THE season for fashion, I often see ladies reverting to the #basic basics – like oversized sweaters and leggings, infinity scarves, and tall boots – for the big fall 3 (in my mind), the apple orchard, the pumpkin patch, and the fall festival.
I’m not saying this is bad – I think we’ve just seen the same looks over and over again associated with fall. As a result, these looks are a no-brainer. Plus, they’re super comfy and allow you to layer – especially key when autumn weather is unpredictable af.
I just think we need a reminder that #basic is not the end-all for fall fashion – especially when fall trends and favs apply well to looks that skew closer to the grungy, rocker, and boho side of the spectrum.
And so, internet friends, these are three cute outfits for fall that aren’t basic:
Cute Outfits for Fall: Apple Orchard

The apple orchard outfit generally requires extra bit of consideration regarding comfort and mobility, because if you’re actually going in and picking apples, you’re going to need a hands-free look with a (mostly) supportive shoe. This is important for, y’know, uneven ground, ladders, etc. Plus, you need clothes that you’re okay with getting a little dirty.
I love grunge staples, like destroyed jeans and flannel for this (check out the uneven hem on this top – loove) paired with a pair of supportive but edgy moto boots. A crossbody bag with a little bit of hardware keeps you handsfree, while an ironic beanie keeps the hair out of your eyes. Since this look is pretty androgynous, I’d add a wine red lip for a little extra feminine oomph; you can double down on the vampiness with a delicious and ladylike perfume. (See what I did there? …Apple types? Ok, moving on…)

Even here in the midwest, October weather can range from the 80s to the 40s, so a Saturday date at the pumpkin patch could equally mean freezing or sweating your butt off. I think this is the perfect opportunity to get a little extra mileage out of your favorite pair of summer shorts – paired with comfy Chelsea booties and a pair of black tights, they are perfectly appropriate for fall (and for your Instagram #ootd snaps, obviously).
I really like the look of cutoff shorts with a cropped white button down and an oversize cardigan (bonus points here for a cheery red, a hot color for this fall). A floppy hat and sunnies bring a bit of a rocker vibe, while a crossbody bag, again, keeps your hands free for #fallfestivities.

Velvet is HUGE this fall and seems to be popping up everywhere from Target to Hollister. I personally love how something as simple as a velvet tee gives even the simplest of looks a boho, Florence Welch-y vibe – especially when paired with boho must-haves like suede, cognac leather, and silver accessories. (Bonus points for the turquoise and moon shape!)
Add a trusty pair of black ripped jeans, uber walkable shoes, and a cute clutch (a crossbody bag would also look amazing with this look) you have a low-key but fashion-forward look that wouldn’t be out of place at any fall festival this year, from late-season Oktoberfests to apple harvests to art festivals. It will also keep you comfortable no matter how many steps you get in that day – no tall boots necessary!
