Yes, winter is almost here.

As it was best said in Game of Thrones, “Winter is coming.” Now comes the time of year when people throw on parkas, mittens and hats to protect their bodies from the cold. These accessories do their job well, but many people forget that another important thing needs protection from the cold: your hair

Hair, just like any other part of us, is prone to damage and dryness in this cold season. Here are three winter haircare tips to keeping your locks looking fab all winter long.

1. Apply A Moisturizing Hair Mask / Conditioner

As the weather turns colder, everything on our bodies becomes dry. That’s just how the world works when outdoor humidity is low and heaters are blasting. It’s easy to notice when our face or hands become dehydrated, but dry hair can be harder to identify, especially if you’ve never had issues with that before. During these cold months, everyone’s hair needs some moisture to keep it looking and feeling healthy. Give that back to hair with a deep conditioning hair mask and conditioner.

If you have oily hair like I do, you might be thinking, “But if I use super moisturizing products, my roots looks awful! What should I do?” I’m glad you asked. Here’s THE key hair tip for those of you with oily roots: Don’t apply conditioner to your roots! Only use conditioner on the bottom 2/3 of your hair. It’s a popular tip for a reason – it really works.

When I apply my conditioner, I like to gather my hair in the center of the back of my head like I’m about to make a ponytail, and apply the product from where my hair is gathered through to the ends. I’ve done this for years, and my hair has never been healthier. Total game-changer!

2. Limit Hot Tool Use

Hair styling tools are both a blessing and a curse. Yes, they’re efficient and useful in creating hairstyles, but it’s important to consider the damage they cause to your hair. Repeated exposure to high heat reduces hair strength and dries it out over time. Letting your hair air-dry is the best way to go. Wear a towel hair wrap for five minutes to suck out most of the initial water, comb out your hair, and let dry. Simple as that!

It can be tedious to sit and just wait for your hair to dry. Trust me, I totally understand the appeal: You’re showering before a get-together with friends or for a hot date, and since walking in the cold with wet hair is extremely unappealing, you blast that dryer on high heat.

If cutting out hair tools from your routine is impossible, I have two recommendations. First, limit your hot tool use to just the hairdryer. You can actually do a lot in terms of adding curls and texture with just a brush and hairdryer! Second, always use cold air. It might take longer to dry all your hair, but I promise that your hair with look and feel MUCH healthier in the end.

3. Try a De-Tangling Brush

Brushing your hair can turn into a knotty nightmare most days, especially in winter. Hair becomes much more brittle this time of year. My hair brush is constantly full of hair from about November through February. Needless to say, seeing how much hair I’ve lost is pretty alarming. The constant tension created by brushing hair (wet hair especially) can take its toll over time.

Reduce hair breakage by investing in a good hairbrush! A brush that’s specifically designed to de-tangle hair (see my pick below) is your best option. These brushes have spaced-out bristles to reduce the tensions they create on the hair, leaving you with some sleek-looking locks. Plus, most of them are safe to use on wet hair! Score!
