4 Classic Game Day Hairstyles & How to Get Them

These tried and tested go-to hairstyles will make you look effortless and cool on any game day.

Game days are always a great time, and they necessitate easy, relaxed hairstyles that still look super cute. Why stress about hair when you can be grabbing food with your friends and catching up before the game?

A couple weeks back we shared our favorite easy hairstyles for college, and today we’re sharing a few hairstyles for game day specifically.

You’ve seen these looks before and you love them — there’s nothing ultra complicated or difficult to achieve here. You will, however, look amazing at the next game. The best part about these looks is that you can wear any of them with a hat to rep your team.

The High Pony:

The high ponytail is an amazing look. It’s simple, sporty, glam, and preppy all in one go, not to mention familiar and oh-so easy. The thing about high ponytails is that they lift your face, and make you look youthful and energized. It reminds us of cheerleaders and fun and on game days, you’re going to be doing a ton of cheering and hopefully having a ton of fun. High ponies are easy enough to pull off with no mirror and you can make them as sleek or messy as you want them to be.

For a sleek look, use a hairbrush or comb to pull your hair back before using an elastic to tie it up. Add a drop of serum beforehand as well to give your hair some extra shine, and some hairspray afterward to keep everything in place.

For a messier look, simply tease the base of your ponytail and play with your roots until you get to the level of messiness you would like to achieve.

The Double French Braids:

Yes, you know this look too. It’s a classic. This is the look you wore to all of your “battle of the classes” events in high school or powder-puff games. This is another sporty, but girly look and will definitely go with any jersey-face paint combo you’ve got going on.

For those of you who don’t know how to French braid, don’t panic. It’s simple, and with some practice, you’ll be able to do it in your sleep. (As always, youtube tutorials like the one above will help!)

Start by parting your hair in the middle with a comb. After separating your hair into two sections, it’s time to french braid each of the two sections individually. See the tutorial above for full instructions — it’s easier than it looks, promise!

If you have curly hair and would like a sleeker braid look, I would suggest brushing your hair well beforehand. However, if you would like your texture to show through, then skip this step.

The Classic French Braid:

An easier version of the look above, the single french braid is another classic. It never gets old and always looks cute.

This is one of my favorite hairstyles because there’s usually a ton of bonding involved as friends gather around to try to French braid each other’s hair before a big game. It’s girly and fun and keeps your hair out of your face while you’re cheering on your favorite team.

For this look, follow the same steps as the double French braid, only without parting your hair in the middle. Instead, you’re going to bring all of your hair back, so that you have no part, and start the braiding in the middle of your head. Here’s a great video that shows you step by step.

The Half-Up Half-Down Ponytail:

The half-up half-down high pony is one of my favorite looks to wear anytime, but especially on game days. For those of you want a little bit more glamour in your life, this look is for you. It’s youthful and fresh, yet beautifully dramatic. Bonus glamour points if you rock this look with hoop earrings. Just grab whatever amount of hair you’re comfortable with from the center of your head and pull it into a high, high, ponytail. Once secured, tug it a little to give it a little life on the tail. I find that the less hair I use for the actual ponytail, the more glam it looks.
