Designer Spotlight: Liz Payne

A color fiesta.

For this week’s Designer Spotlight, we’re gonna do something a little different and focus on the roots of fashion, specifically the humble beginnings of our favorite wardrobe pieces… that’s right, we’re getting into textile design

To introduce you to the world of textiles, we’re taking you into the crazy-colorful, extremely detailed, and creative world of embroidery artist Liz Payne.

Liz Payne

Liz Payne is a textile artist living and working in the inner west area of Sydney, Australia. She creates bold, vibrant, and detailed hand-stitched embroidery, bridging the gap between our pre-conceived notions of art and craft: Think layered creations with paint, embroidery, beads and sequins.

Liz got her start in the arts in college. After completing her Bachelor of Visual Arts Degree at the University of Western Sydney, Liz then went on to further her studies in Graphic Design. After several years of working as a designer both in Sydney and London, Liz returned home and took an opportunity to get back to what she actually loved and get her hands dirty again- a creative release that you just can’t replicate on a computer!

She told TheDesignFiles

Growing up I was always creating – either painting, stitching, sewing clothes or making jewellery. My Mum was very influential, and I was fortunate enough to be surrounded by her huge collection of fabrics, wools, beads and paints. Often I would spend all weekend making something or other. Little did I realise then, but those days were laying the foundations for what I would work with years later!

Although she had been sewing and stitching since before she knew what the term ‘embroidery’ meant, in 2012 Liz truly began to take her practice seriously. She decided to showcase her work by joining Instagram. The following year, she opened her Etsy store and the rest, as they say, is history. With a happy and ever-growing network of customers, Liz has become quite the hit in the textile world and also sells her work at Koskela in Sydney.

In 2014, Liz was a finalist for Craft NSW’s Emerging Artist Award and has since been a finalist in several other awards. Her Etsy store, Flirting With Yellow, was the winner for the Etsy Design Award for Art, in the Illustration and Papergoods category.

In addition to exhibiting artworks and selling pieces online, Liz has also begun expanding her range with one of a kind pieces, including necklaces, earrings and other accessories. No two artworks are the same, ensuring each piece is unique, as everything is carefully crafted by hand.

I found Liz’s work while scrolling through my Instagram, being a textile design student myself, I was instantly captivated. I mean, bold, bright patterns in a kaleidoscope of colors and hand embellishment with yarn, beads and sequins… it’s the perfect mix of textiles and art!

As a new fan of her brand, I’m excited to see where Liz Payne will go next. Who knows? You might just find yourself wearing one of her designs someday.
