It’s time to live on the wild side.

Writing for College Fashion has its perks regarding personal style. How could it not, when it gets me to spend so much time hunting down the “right” pieces and scouring websites for an affordable item, finally compiling all of these gems into an outfit set?

Making outfit sets as a writer here is an exercise in creativity. You start with one piece, and build around it, using your intuition and well-honed personal style to inform your judgement. That dress goes with those shoes because, well, it just does.

But to make these sets, you must start with your inspiration. You look around you, at popular culture, at what’s trending on Instagram, and sometimes you come up empty-handed.

When you turn away from the obvious, easy, familiar sources, you can find the most exciting ideas to inspire you. Recently, the best place I’ve found inspiration is not in my own style, but in what my personal style is not.

That’s right, the intuition that has guided my outfits sets is boring. It plays safe. It could use an update.

For my last CF article, I wanted to show you guys some outfits that are beyond the scope of my personal style. I wanted to venture into uncharted territory. Maybe these outfits are “safe” for you. Maybe we won’t even agree that these outfits “work.”

To create the following looks, I took pieces that I’ve hesitated to wear, for one reason or another, and for once, I didn’t try to make outfits where everything “goes together.” Let’s see the results!

1. Fishnet Stockings

Products: White Dress – TJ Maxx, Blue Boots – Chinese Laundry, Lipstick – Smashbox, Fishnets – Revolve, Yellow Dress – Nordstrom, Black Boots – Jeffrey Campbell

Fishnets have always been a symbol of “rebellion.” What is it exactly about this diamond pattern that threatens authority?

Doesn’t matter. If this is a rebellious pattern then pair it with flirty dresses, a strong red lip, and chunky boots. The result? Chaos. Confusion. And a look that doesn’t adhere to any one aesthetic.

2. Duster Jacket

Products: Duster Jacket – Gap, Mules – J.Crew Factory, Choker – Ettika, Jeans – Levi’s, Crop Top – Free People, Nail Polish – Essie

Duster jackets have always looked to me, like, well, bathrobes. Fancy bathrobes, but still.

I went for a “modern bohemian” look here, mixing high (satin mules, glittery polish, dangling choker) and low (distressed denim, cropped henley tank) items to style a piece that defies category anyway.

3. Tweed Blazer

Products: Blazer – Treasure & Bond, Eyeshadow Palette – NYX, Choker – Saks Off 5th, Boots – Kohl’s, Lace Slip – Show Me Your Mumu

Finally, we come to the tweed blazer, the academic staple, loafers and pipe not included. But seriously, what would look better with a lace slip than an oversized plaid jacket? Going along with this unexpected theme, add a choker, knee-high boots, and a glittery eye, and you’ve got a look that stands out.

What Do You Think?

Are there any pieces you’re scared of? Are you a fan of these looks? Would you try any of these pieces?
