Hello, new year — 2017 is now a thing of the past!

No matter how your year went, chances are that you can think of one or two things that you want to do differently in the new year. From work to school to social life things, the new year is all about bringing positive changes to your life.

However, trying to bring on so much change in such a short amount of time is stressful! Many new year’s goals are made and then broken, and we usually shrug them off before going back to stressing about life as we know it.

Here at College Fashion, we’re not picky about sticking rigidly to resolutions — but we are obsessed with living our best life. If we can do that against the background of the new year, even better!

Here are a few ways to start going after your best life this new year!

1. Reflect on the Old to Start Thinking about the New

Even if you had a good year, you may not want to reminisce about last year, but it’s necessary! By looking back on both the bad and the good, you can figure out things that you wish to either focus on avoiding or magnifying in your life.

Too many instances (both good and bad) to count? Focus on your top five in “best moments of 2017” and top five “what I would have changed” to make it more manageable!

And don’t worry about getting absolutely everything! While you may be tempted to put the mainstay resolutions on your “what I can change for this year” list, ask yourself if each thing is really actionable. There’s no need to bog yourself down with those easily breakable goals, not when you’re trying to focus on real improvement!

2. Make Your Goals Bite-Sized

Have your goals written down? Great! It’s time to break them down into attainable mini-goals. For the sake of your motivation and confidence, this step is essential: by breaking your goal down into steps and smaller milestones, there is more gratification to be found along the way.

For instance, if your goal is to focus on your mental health, you can break that down into several categories, like making a self-care plan, going to therapy, scheduling a mental health day once a week, etc. These things are smaller, and you can schedule them, which is crucial to keeping yourself accountable!

Once you have everything broken down into mini goals, be sure to add them to your planner so you don’t forget them!

3. Get Prepared to Face the New Year with Positivity

Yes, by most accounts, 2017 was a raging dumpster fire of the year (even more so than 2016, which is saying something). Instead of anticipating 2018 to be much of the same, charge up your positive thinking based on things that bummed you out in 2017.

For example, if you were discouraged by the state of politics in 2017, find a political newsletter or cause to focus on. For instance, this 2018, I’m focusing on Emily’s List, an organization that helps women be elected, which is the dose of girl power and activism that my 2017 so needed.

There are so many ways to enact change and find positivity along the way. You just have to find the thing that gives you hope and then a way to spread it to others!

4. Take Time For Yourself

Before you head out for the parties and get-togethers (or after, you do you!), check in with yourself! After the stress of the holiday season, it can be a bit harrowing to be expected to start living the changes you set down on paper. Give yourself a day or two before starting as a breather.

You can treat these days as “cheat days” for whatever you’re quitting in 2018, but I think treating them as self-care days is best. Find what you need to soothe yourself and get yourself into the best mode to take on 2018. For me, that’s cleaning my entire dorm room and drinking tea as I listen to a favorite podcast.

You don’t have to do a lot — but do something for yourself to get yourself ready for the new year.

5. Celebrate!

Saving the best for last — it’s time to party! You survived another year, and that is amazing! Grab your nearest and dearest, and make this year your own by planning to enjoy all that 2018 has to offer. You deserve it.
