How the Girls of Harry Potter Would Dress in 2016

‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows’ took place in 1997.  Here’s how Hermione, Ginny, Tonks, and Luna would dress today.

Technically, the witches and wizards of the Harry Potter books typically wear robes. Much to the chagrin of some of my fellow fans, the movies tended to ignore this and usually stuck the golden trio in hoodies and jeans. While I’m a books-over-movies devotee, I don’t mind this change so much. Witches and wizards would have to have muggle clothes for their forays outside of the wizarding world. And besides, you can’t have much fun, fashion-wise, with typical magical attire.

That’s why I’ve decided to imagine which muggle styles our fave HP ladies would love in 2016, and how they would dress. 2016 is eighteen years after the battle of Hogwarts, and one year before Deathly Hallows’ epilogue. Between that information and what J. K. Rowling has said on Pottermore and in interviews, we have a pretty good idea of what these magical mavens would be up to today (HP spoilers ahead, obviously).

Read on to see what they’d wear.

Hermione Granger

Products: Blazer, Top, Pants, Shoes, Bag, R necklace, H necklace.

In 2016, Hermione continues to be the HBIC, working on issues such as elf rights and removing prejudiced laws as the Deputy Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement. She and her husband Ron have a 10-year-old girl, Rose, and a 9-year-old boy, Hugo (the R and H necklaces in the set above represent both her and Ron and the kids).

She loves to rock a great blazer/skinny pants combo like the one above. Her job pays well, so in addition to staples like Topshop, she loves labels like Theory, Mulberry, Burberry, Coach, and Chanel (everyone at the Ministry gushes over the quilted tote that never leaves her side).

When she has to get glam for Ministry events, or is receiving her multitudes of awards, she maintains her classic style but with feminine flair, wearing the likes of J. Mendel, Elie Saab, and Reem Acra.

Ginny Weasley

Products: Sweater, Culottes, Shoes, Bag, Cuff.

Move over, Alexa Chung. Ginny Weasley Potter is the new it-girl on the scene.

I once saw an amazing fan art imagining Ginny on the cover of Witch Weekly, labeled a style icon. I love it because it totally fits. She was a Quidditch star and now writes for The Daily Prophet, plus she’s married to the most famous wizard in the world and, with her three kids, is basically the epitome of the cute mom-on-the-go trope.

Ginny’s not a girly-girl, but after growing up with six brothers, she likes to add feminine touches to her relaxed, slightly edgy look. Ever since Harry showed her what the internet was she’s read Man Repeller religiously. She’s all over trends like athleisure, flatforms, and culottes. Comfort is key for her. I can totally see her tossing on the outfit above with some chic sunglasses after leaving a workout on the Quidditch pitch, ready to head home and try to meet her deadline before her kids start badgering her.

She has an enviable handbag and shoe collection, but most often she’s toting her black Balenciaga City bag. She loves labels like ALC, Victoria Beckham, Chloe, Fendi, Self-Portrait, Proenza Schouler, Tibi, Balmain, Frame, and Rag and Bone. On chill days, she can often be seen running around in a breezy Free People dress paired with Acne Studios boots.

Nymphadora Tonks

Products: Tee, Jeans, Jacket, Sneakers, Purple bracelet, Stretchy bracelets, Stud bracelet.

Just humor me and pretend my favorite character is still alive, OK?

Also, confession time: I recently got back from my sixth Harry Potter convention, and I always dress up as Tonks. Interpreting her style is what gave me the idea for this post. And yes, I am proud to be a huge nerd.

Tonks’ edgy style wouldn’t have changed much through the years, but she’d love today’s boyfriend jeans and pleather jackets, as well as the resurgence of the grunge look. Her go-to look will always be a graphic tee, ripped jeans, and sneakers or combat books underneath an edgy jacket or vest.

For dressed-up occasions, she’d opt for a moody floral slip dress or black bandage number. She’s a tomboy who loves to have fun with fashion (and beauty, considering she can change her face and hair instantly). She sticks to flats because she’s way too clumsy for heels.

Tonks is a kick-butt auror and an understanding mom to her trouble-making 18-year-old. Money was tight for a while, but it’s been easier ever since Hermione helped eliminate the anti-werewolf legislation that was making it hard for Tonks’ husband, Remus, to get a job.

Still, Tonks tends to favor cheap-chic pieces, be they from thrift stores, Topshop, Forever 21, or Hot Topic. She loves Converse, and Wildfox and Blank NYC are also fave brands. Whenever she has access to a muggle computer, she indulges in her Nasty Gal obsession. Otherwise, her typical splurges are on Pamela Love and Eddie Borgo jewelry. Bag-wise, she usually sticks to a tried-and-true, beat-up backpack.

Luna Lovegood

Products: Top, Cardigan, Skirt, Boots, Clutch, Earrings.

Finally, Luna Lovegood has the most obviously unique style of all the HP girls. Oftentimes she has to choose practicality over style when she’s out on expeditions for her job as a magical naturalist or when she’s at home with her twin boys. Still, she adds quirky flair to her look no matter what.

For the most part, Luna makes her own clothes, jewelry, and accessories, or loves vintage stuff. She’s super conscious about animal welfare and the environment, so she does tend to splurge on Stella McCartney’s clothes, bags, and shoes. She especially loves Stella’s major platform oxfords and the superhero clutches from a few seasons back. She also has some other designer finds in her wardrobe, by the likes of Moschino, House of Holland, and Mother denim (their gender-neutral line rocked her world). When she’s just chilling, her go-to uniform is an oversized, tiger-emblazoned Kenzo sweatshirt, leggings, Converse, and, as always, piles of eccentric, handmade jewelry.

As someone who has always mixed prints like crazy and worn super eclectic mixes, Luna has been drooling over everything (except those kangaroo fur slippers–ugh) Alessandro Michele has been doing for Gucci. I modeled the outfit above after a Gucci runway look featuring a kitty sweater, and I tend to think Luna would have splurged on the Gucci outfit itself.

What do you think?

Do you agree with my interpretations of these characters’ styles?  Did I include your favorite character?  How do you think witches and wizards would dress in 2016?  Let me know in the comments!
