Thin chokers and chunky sandals are a match made in heaven.

Frances and I have been studying abroad together in London for the summer and her sporty-cool outfits never fail to catch my eye during class. Fran manages to look equal parts edgy and chic no matter the weather (which is quite unpredictable in London!). I had to ask her for her style secrets in the hopes of imparting some fashionable wisdom onto CF readers.

Let’s Talk Fashion

Who or what inspires your style? “For a while I tried really hard to have a California-skater type style. I would still say I am inspired by more sporty, cool looking trends. Oh, and I think jean jackets are the greatest inventions in the world. Honestly this sounds so lame, but my little sister is so hip and has just an overall rad style that is pretty unique, so sometimes I base my clothes off [of] hers just [because] it works really well for her.”

Where do you like to shop?
“I like Zara a lot and I’ve been shopping at River Island a good amount since I’ve been in London. I really like their stuff. I can also do the classic Urban [Outfitters] shopping spree every once in a while. Then for my ‘mom’ clothes, I shop at Cos, always. Their clothes are so dope for when you’re wanting to look like a 40 year old mother of three, but also be kinda chic and comfy! Lots of my more fashion-forward work clothes are from there.”

How would you describe your sense of style? “Hmm, this is a funny question because I would say I simply don’t have a sense of style. I literally just wear whatever is easy to put on. I suppose you could say my style would be a tad more edgy if I had to say, just [because] I love darker colors, cool sneakers, chokers, [and] stuff like that. And if I wear lipstick, I only wear dark colors. I love pants that cuff tighter at the ankles. Yeah, I guess my style is just weird. Street chic, or something like that…”

Why did you choose this particular outfit?
“I was going to work so I needed something comfortable to walk in but also kind of presentable. I’m really into off-white on white even though I’m convinced it takes a special person to pull it off, which isn’t me, so I wore my jean jacket to offset the whole ensemble. I think white and blue are fabulous pairings, so I chose my comfy blue sandals to wear with it. And my necklaces I just never take off so I guess that’s how I chose them.”

What fashion advice would you give to other students looking to improve their style? “I feel like I so shouldn’t be giving people fashion advice considering I am caught in Nike shorts and a baggy tee shirt half the time, but I guess I would say always dress comfortably for your body type and don’t be afraid to be a little edgy or out there. I would never sacrifice comfort for style, but I think there is just a way to do both.”

What are your favorite trends right now? “Wow, I am so into platform sneakers, same with metallic sneakers; I think those are so hip and cool. I mean, chokers are so making a comeback and I’m ecstatic about it, but I would argue they never went out of style. Overalls are always a classic. I hope those stick as a long-term style rather than a current trend or even a fad. White skirts or shorts during the summer are just my go-to.”

Do you have any favorite designers?
“Haha! I simply couldn’t name a single designer…Rachel Zoe? Her Colette sneakers… I’ve just simply never wanted something more. She designs some really cute tops and dresses. Whoever designs Adidas jackets and shirts and stuff like that – yeah, they’d be my favorite.”

What do you do for fun? Do you have any unique hobbies or interests? “I can’t think of anything right away. I like to read a lot and I am just far too infatuated with finding new music. I also love to kickbox. I guess my weirdest hobby is writing prose and essays and stuff like that, but I feel like during the school year that hobby fades a bit.”

If you could raid anyone’s closet who would it be and why? “My friend Camille. She just has the most amazing clothes. She always looks so put together and hip. I don’t know how she does it or even where she shops, but she does it right.”

If you had $1,000 to spend on any item what would it be and why? “I hate myself for saying this but I would want a dope pair of overalls and I’d spend the rest on rings and necklaces. Accessories are necessities and rings are just a must for me.”

What’s your favorite item in your closet and where did you get it? “My favorite item… I guess it would be my white shorts from Zara, but [they look] like a skirt from the front. Either that or my cat sweatshirt from Urban [Outfitters.]

Elements of Frances’s Outfit

1. Denim Jacket + Monochromatic Colors

Black on black may be classic but it tends to look a bit gloomy for the summer. Take a page from Fran’s book and wear all white, or simply mix white with cream.

2. Choker

To get that “oh, I just threw this on!” look, add simple jewelry that doesn’t overwhelm your look. A small personalized necklace or a thin choker can add just the right amount of edge.

3. Colorful Shoes

Kiss your flip-flops goodbye in favor of a cool pair of chunky or platform sandals. A fun color like hot pink or blue can liven up any outfit. Frances has the right idea with these unique slides.
