Looks on Campus: Magda – Southern Alberta Institute of Technology

Magda’s got a case of the blues… in a good way.

Usually the term “feeling blue” is in reference to one’s sad emotions, but Magda’s personality is anything but! Today, we’re singing the blues in reference to her outfit. As we all know, denim-on-denim can either go very wrong or very right, so Magda’s perfect look caught my eye as an example of the latter.

Let’s Talk Fashion

Who or what inspires your style? “I usually like the outfits that are put together at American Apparel or Urban Outfitters. But person-wise I’d say Sky Ferreira.”

How would you describe your sense of style? “Sometimes I’d say I look homeless or like Bill Cosby, but I usually aim for the grungier side of things.”

When did you start getting into fashion? “Probably in grade 10. I was obsessed with trends and models and I just know so much about clothing in general. I thought it was something that would just be a career of mine.”

What are your favorite trends right now? “I’m really loving the heels that look like they have socks over them – I’m not really sure what they’re called though. Also slip dresses – I just love the way they look.”

Do you have any favorite fashion designers? If so, who? “I always love Elie Saab dresses, but the classic Ralph Lauren denim is always a fave that I splurge on to treat myself.”

If you could raid anyone’s closet, who would it be and why? “Any of the Kardashians. They basically have every piece you can think of.”

Why did you choose this particular outfit? “Well I wear my huge denim jacket every day; it’s kind of become a staple piece of mine, as well as any kind of combat boot.”

Where do you like to shop? “About 80% of the clothes I have are from H&M. I really love Topshop for dresses and accessories, as well as Brandy Melville for basic tops.”

What do you do for fun – do you have any unique hobbies or interests? “I have an Instagram account completely based on makeup looks. That’s usually all I do on my spare time, or online shop for things I can never afford.”

What fashion advice would you give to other students looking to improve their style? “Always stay within your range of comfort and price. Simple changes can also make a big difference. Say – if you like big hoodies, you can always wear a cute big sweatshirt with a design on it to amp up your style game.”

Elements of Magda’s Outfit

1. Denim-on-Denim

It may not be in style for the long haul, but I’ve been spotting denim-on-denim all around campus. It’s undeniable: when it’s done right, it looks great (see: Magda!). Magda sports her classic denim jacket every day and in this Canadian weather, you never know when you’ll need it!

2. Combat Boots

There was a lot of blue and denim going on in Magda’s outfit, but these black combat boots grounded her look. They stayed true to her grunge-inspired vibe.

3. Makeup

Magda’s makeup was flawless. After talking beauty with her and scrolling through her makeup-centric Instagram, she inspired me to be more playful with my own beauty products.

Now we want to know what you think!
