Shelby’s cool style is second only to her ultra-cool personality.

Every once in a while, you meet someone with a larger-than-life personality, someone whose energy fills a room. Today I met one of those people. Shelby brings life to a simple middle-of-the-week outfit with her big smile, unique jewelry, and interestingly proportioned layers.

Let’s Talk Fashion

Who or what inspires your style? “A lot of my style […] comes from some celebrities that are around now. Rihanna, Zendaya, Keke Palmer, and a lot of people are inspired by ’90s trends right now. So like, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air or A Different World.”

Where do you like to shop? “I feel like everybody says this, but the thrift store. That’s where I would get my school uniform with my dad growing up and then I would see cool stuff to wear outside of school and he would be, like, ‘Oh yeah that’s two dollars. Get it!’ So that’s kind of where that started and it’s also where I shop now with my own money. I also shop at H&M, Forever 21, Spencer’s, Hot Topic, and I like online shopping on Amazon. There are some really cheap crop tops on there right now!”

How would you describe your sense of style? “Quirky at times and then badass at times. And chill, but I’m also not one to go out in my sweatpants unless I’m working out. So that’s kind of my thought process – I’m always trying to look cute unless I’m going to sleep or going to work out.”

Why did you choose this particular outfit? “I didn’t wake up early enough to put together something over-the-top, so this was the easiest way to look cute. I think the accessories help make it look nicer than it actually is.”

How would you say your style has evolved since coming to college? “It was always really quirky and kind of weird. I wore a Michael Jackson glove all through middle school and I have a leather jacket that’s covered in buttons that I really love. Right now I’m really focusing on making things more minimalist while still making a statement. So really, taking all of my creative kid stuff and slowly evolving them into something cool and semi-adult. But I always say to be you. Because being yourself is so much more fun than trying to be someone else.”

What fashion advice would you give others looking to improve their style? “Figure out what best shows off you. Like for one of my friends, she’s a more athletic person so she’ll wear athletic clothes. But they’re cute athletic clothes and it just kind of caters to her style. And I have another friend that likes more flowy-type clothes and she didn’t even use to dress like that in high school. I didn’t […] dress like this in high school at all! So when I got to college, it was all about playing with stuff and experimenting. So if you like something and you feel comfortable in it, that’s what matters.”

What are your favorite trends right now? “I love the choker trend and the choker-necklace combo. I used to wear, like, seven necklaces at once every day in high school because it was my ‘thing.’ So this is my adult, more subtle version of that. I see more people getting their nails done and I never used to get my nails done ’til this year, [because] I like treating myself. I also really like the ’90s dark lip because everybody looks good in it! And the whole ‘girl love’ thing. Like if you see a girl with a cute outfit, people are really complimentary and that’s something that should keep being a thing.”

What do you do for fun? Do you have any unique hobbies or interests? “I’m a theatre major so acting is a hobby/career. I sing and I also do makeup now so that’s fun. Doing my own makeup, doing other people’s makeup, doing photoshoots, and I kind of model sometimes too. I don’t have a lot of chances to do that, so when I get the opportunity I go for it! All those ‘celebrity-like’ aspects.”

If you could raid anyone’s closet, who would it be and why? “That’s so hard! I want to say my favorite YouTuber. Her YouTube name is SmartistaBeauty, but her real name is Bri Hall and she’s like a goddess to me. Her natural hair, her makeup slays, and her clothes are the same style as mine. And she makes it seem like she doesn’t even try! She’s so cool!”

Elements of Shelby’s Outfit

1. Oversize Chambray Button-Up

Working as a button-up or as a dress, Shelby’s oversized chambray shirt acts as a casual cover-up for her laid-back outfit. Whether you choose to snag a men’s shirt from a thrift store or go a more tailored route with a shirtdress, a collared button-up piece like Shelby’s will add versatility to your closet.

2. Layered Jewelry

Although she now wears fewer necklaces than she did in high school, Shelby still uses jewelry to make a statement. With the majority of her purchases coming from H&M or Spencer’s, she shows that mixing and matching different styles can create an eclectic look while adding personality to an otherwise simple outfit.

3. Colorful Hair

Shelby has a bright, colorful personality, so her bold, bright hair color is a natural fit. Whether you want to give it a DIY try at home or go to a professional salon, now is the perfect time to step outside of your comfort zone and try a fun hair color. If dying your hair is too much, consider a temporary dye or an updo with sprayable hair chalk in your favorite color. You never know what you might love!
