Keep it casual, keep doing you.

Style should be defined by what you like to wear and what makes you feel comfortable, not by the opinions of others. T.J. makes this concept crystal clear, styling himself in an outfit that expresses his personality.

Let’s Talk Fashion

Who or what inspires your style? “I think what inspires my style are the regular people who generally like wearing plaid shirts, basic jeans, and Converse. Generally, I am inspired by people who can balance style and comfort.”

How would you describe your sense of style? “I would describe my sense of style as, ‘A so-called hipster who’s not hipster enough for expensive clothes, so he shops at sales and has a wardrobe full of plaid shirts’ sense of style.”

What are your favorite trends right now? “I’m not really into trends because I find it hard to follow them, plus my bank account doesn’t let me spend too much.”

Do you have an favorite fashion designers? If so, who? “I don’t know any; I live under a rock.”

If you could raid anyone’s closet, who would it be and why? “I would raid a hipster’s or lumberjack’s closet. The only reason is to get some plaid shirts, as if I don’t have enough of those!”

Why did you choose this particular outfit? “I wanted something warm and comfortable to wear, and plaid shirts are always comfortable to wear during the autumn season. You can never go wrong with a simple tee. I chose the grey pants because I haven’t worn them in a while. A bomber jacket – because I think bomber jackets look cool and lastly, the socks because bless ’em. Also I wanted to look like a presentable human being today.”

What’s your favorite part of your outfit? “My favorite part of my outfit are my socks. I usually try to break the monotony of my clothes by wearing colorful socks. Also my socks say ‘You’ve got to be squidding me’ which is hilarious because there are caricatures of squids surrounding the quote. It doesn’t take a lot to give me joy.”

Where do you like to shop? “It might not look it, but I usually buy clothes at Topman, H&M, Levi’s, and Gap. These are the main stores I go to, also Mark’s warehouse might be considered ‘Dad’ clothes but their plaid, henley, and raglan shirts are bitchin’!”

What do you like to do for fun? “Things that I like to do for fun are play video games, [sing a lot], and draw a lot.”

What fashion advice would you give to other students looking to improve their style? “My fashion advice for other students is to shop [for] whatever clothes are comfortable to you. Just because money is a restriction does not mean your fashion should be too. Also style and comfort can go together like bread and butter. It might take a while to find a style that suits you but once you find it, you can never make a mistake when choosing clothes that are perfect for yourself. Lastly, fashion trends may come and go but your unique style does not; this is what defines you and if that means borrowing trends that are from recent years or even decades ago, [that’s OK].”

Elements of TJ’s Outfit

1. Bomber Jacket

Many stores are selling bomber jackets now. It seems everywhere you turn, you see one. I’ve even been seeing embroidered and printed styles all over campus! But you can never go wrong with a simple bomber like T.J.’s.

2. Plaid Button-Up

Plaid shirts are a wardrobe basic and they’re certainly a go-to styling or layering item. T.J. rocks plaid in most of his outfits and does so to perfection here.

3. Squid Socks

Though they’re a small detail of T.J.’s outfit, his adorable socks grabbed my attention. They show his humor and quirkiness. It’s the little details like this that can add so much to your outfit and express your personality.

Now we want to know what you think!
