An “alternative” way to spend your Friday.

“On My Playlist” takes new hits and old favorites and turns them into outfits that anyone can rock!

As far as I know, every millennial went through an “emo/alternative” phrase. (Even if we insisted that it was not a phrase…) I am no exception, and this week I found myself turning up the Fall Out Boy tracks in my music app. (Maybe it’s because I’m prepping for a very exciting concert, but more on that next article!)

With that in mind, I decided to do a proper trip down memory lane and get inspired by Fall Out Boy’s “Sugar, We’re Goin’ Down,” Paramore’s “Brick By Boring Brick,” and The All-American Rejects’ “Gives You Hell.”

I took major inspiration from the awesomely creative music videos. (I just may be watching them again as you read this. Don’t judge me, please.) That being said, these outfits were designed with everyday functionality in mind. You can go from the set of a Fall Out Boy music video to class, and then to a study date with the cutie next door, and so on.

Sugar, We’re Goin’ Down

Products: Necklace – Amazon, Sweatshirt – Gap, Sneakers – Kohl’s, Overalls – Lulu’s

If you don’t currently know the words to this classic Fall Out Boy song, chances are you once did. Surprisingly enough, this was one of my first times seeing the music video, and I’m so glad I took the time to watch. The girl’s fashion is on point for me. So cute, so simple, and – surprise! – it’s trendy again in 2017.

Overalls have recently made a reappearance on shelves and hangers everywhere, so don’t shy away from this throwback trend. This pair is chic and grown up with a cool silhouette and rips in the legs, so let it be the outfit’s centerpiece.

The sweatshirt and shoes are classics for a reason, with the shirt’s knot being a small detail too adorable to ignore. Speaking of small details: slip on a small homage to our horned loverboy with this necklace, and you are all set!

Brick By Boring Brick

Products: Jacket – Forever 21, Dress – Hollister, Shoes – Payless, Hair Clips – Urban Outfitters

While the music video may be a bit scary, you can’t deny that the style is super sweet. Taking cues from that, I couldn’t resist splashing some florals in via the dress (perfect for this coming spring)!

Now it’s time to add some extras. Saddle shoes capture a bit more innocence, and the butterfly clips are a little nod to the video’s girl as well as a few lyrics in the song itself. However, to toughen the look up a bit more, I decided a military-style jacket would be a nice neutral touch.

If you want to give the outfit a more punk flair, try fishnet stockings underneath the dress and switching out the saddle shoes for booties!

Gives You Hell

Products: Cardigan – Tobi, Shirt – Aeropostale, Skirt – Hollister, Boots – Hot Topic

This music video was probably the most fun of all three, both in terms of fashion and in action! I couldn’t help but try to recreate the opposing doppelgängers and their styles in this outfit.

For the wild rocker side, throw on some animal print and studs with the cardigan and the booties. For the more sweet and traditional side, slip into a soft chambray button-down and a gorgeously colored (and reasonably cozy) skirt.

You can play up either side with various accessories. My suggestions? For the punk side, go for a beanie and a heavy metal necklace, and maybe bring out the fishnets for this outfit as well. More sweet than spunky? A cute knit scarf and some knee-high socks will make the outfit that much more adorable!
