Unexpected Style Inspiration: 2017 Golden Globe Nominees

Wear these looks to an award season viewing party and if anyone guesses the inspiration, let me know so I can feel like my life’s work is done.

If you were expected the latest post in my Unexpected Style Inspiration series to be Christmas-themed, I’m afraid you’re about to be bitterly disappointed. Apologies. I’m still absolutely swamped with deadlines so I cannot get into the Christmas spirit (yet!).

Instead, I’m trying to find motivation to finish all my assignments and essays and projects by procrastinating, as usual. My favorite method of procrastination? Movies.

The past few years, I’ve been trying to get a head start on the awards season prep by watching as many of the nominated films as possible. So, in honor of the nominees for the 2017 Golden Globes, here are some looks inspired by them. It fills me with both joy and dread to think that by the time awards season ends, yet another school year will be nearing its end. But, the less said about that the better.

#1 La La Land

This is the movie I’m most excited about seeing this awards season. La La Land won’t be released over here in the UK until January, but that hasn’t stopped me from watching all the trailers and getting some serious inspiration. Plus, Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling are two of my favorite actors/people. It’s a win/win for me.

Get Emma Stone’s already iconic look from the trailer with a yellow lace dress, some glamorous black heels and a red bag. Add a nod to Hollywood with star shaped earrings.

#2 American Crime Story: The People vs. O.J. Simpson

Ryan Murphy’s American Crime Story: The People vs. O.J. Simpson was the show everyone was talking about this year. Naturally, it received five Golden Globe nominations.

Channel that fantastic 1990s courtroom fashion with this look, which would be great for work. Make sure you reference the ’90s with these trendy flatform espadrilles.

Products: Shirt – H&M, Shoes – Boohoo, Bag – Zara, Pants – Boohoo

#3 Nocturnal Animals

Fashion’s very own Tom Ford got the industry buzzing when he returned to direct another stylish flick. (His last was 2009’s A Single Man.) Starring Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal, this dark mystery drama is full of twists, turns and secrets.

The key to conveying those twists and turns with your style? Unexpected textures, fabrics, and layers – I chose this velvet bralette to be worn under a mesh t-shirt in a color palette that reflects the trailer.

Products: Jeans – Topshop, Boots – PrettyLittleThing, Jacket – Mango, Bralette – Topshop, Tee – River Island

What do you think?

Which of these looks is your favorite? What was your favorite movie this year? What are you most looking forward to watching? Let’s talk about all this, and films in general, in the comments!
