Unexpected Style Inspiration: Names

What’s in a name? A whole lot of inspiration, surprisingly.

If only my actual, real life handwriting were this neat.

Last week, I read this post by Sable over at xoVain about using makeup colors only called ‘Sable,’ and I couldn’t help but wonder (apologies, I slipped into my inner Carrie Bradshaw there) if the same principle could be applied to fashion.

I’m not sure about you, but if a store names clothes after people, I REALLY pay attention. Like, I could see the world’s most perfect dress and if it was named after, say, someone who bullied me when I was a kid, I’d be completely put off it.

Now, this may just be me and my tendency to overthink things and read way too deeply into literally everything, but it’s an interesting thought nonetheless.

So I decided to embark on a mission. Find pieces named Lorna and create outfits out of them. Initially, I thought I’d struggle a bit finding items named Lorna. It’s a tough life having a name that’s not really that common (or that nice, but that’s another rant for another day). Although, saying this, in Friends With Benefits, Patricia Clarkson’s character and I share a name, which is pretty exciting.

You might think doing an entire post based on things named after myself is vain, but only FOUR of my last TWELVE instagram (@lorna_mcknz!) posts are selfies. Totally not vain. At all. Okay, maybe a little bit.

However, there were actually a few things I found named after me, and I won’t lie, they were pretty cute.

So, here’s what I came up with! If you want to represent my own good name, go ahead and cop the pieces below. If not, why not have a search for your name, or maybe some of your friends’ or relatives’ names? The opportunities are endless, like names themselves. There is a child in the world called North West, after all.

1. Boohoo Floral Bomber

Products: Bomber, Top, Shoes, Bag, Jeans, Sunglasses

So, how amazing is this Lorna floral bomber jacket? I feel privileged to share a name with such a fine piece of clothing. Bomber jackets are still a huge trend, and this one is a nice twist on a classic.

I’m really into boyfriend jeans these days, especially when paired with sneakers and crop tops like this. Rose gold sunglasses are also a big trend for summer, and these H&M ones match this ensemble perfectly.

2. Boohoo Wide Leg Trouser

Products: Trousers, Top, Shoes, Sunglasses, Bracelets, Bag

There’s a real theme here with Boohoo naming items after me. Maybe it’s because I buy so much stuff from there that they thought they owed it to me? Anyway, these Lorna printed boho trousers (the trousers are called Lorna, it’s not a repeated pattern print of my face… no one needs that) are yet another staple for summer. My own mother has just bought a pair. Teamed with a crochet crop top, lace-up sandals, some sunglasses and a basket bag, this look is very Vanessa Hudgens at Coachella.

3. Topshop Shoes and Boohoo Culotte Jumpsuit

Products: Jumpsuit, Shoes, Bag, Arm Cuff

Another of this year’s biggest trends (us Lornas are very fashion-forward, clearly): culottes. I love this Boohoo culotte jumpsuit, especially the lace back detailing. Paired with these amazing Lorna shoes from Topshop, a clutch bag and a gold arm cuff, this is definitely something this particular Lorna would wear on a night out.

So, what do you think?

Would you wear these outfits/my name? Are you going to go hunting for clothes named after you? Do you pay attention to the names of clothes? What’s your name, what does it mean? Were you singing the Name Game song from American Horror Story: Asylum throughout this, or was that just me? Let’s talk in the comments!
