Unexpected Style Inspiration: November Book Covers

Take inspiration from some of the month’s best new books!

As college students, most of our reading is academic. I rarely have time to read for myself, and it’s something I’d like to get back into.

While looking up reviews for good, plain old fiction books (my favorite!), I came across this article over at ELLE. Immediately, I was struck by the book covers. If I wasn’t studying journalism, I definitely think I’d be doing graphic design, so this kind of thing sticks out to me.

So, here are some outfits inspired by ELLE’s best new books of the month. If anyone guesses what your outfit is inspired by, you know they’ve actually read the book and not just the reviews, unlike me! (I’m hoping to read at least one of these soon…)

1. Prince Lestat and the Realms of Atlantis by Anne Rice

Prince Lestat and the Relams of Atlantis via Amazon

This new book from Anne Rice is part of her popular Vampire Chronicles series. This is actually the twelfth book in this series – so if you’re into vampires and the paranormal, there’s plenty of material here.

I liked this cover because it was very minimalist, almost “normcore.” I went with a very simple outfit inspired by it – a black turtleneck paired with a denim pinafore and some chunky boots. The mermaid scales on the earrings are a nod to Atlantis, although I’ve never been, so couldn’t tell you if there are actually mermaids there.

Products: Pinafore, Boots, Bag, Earrings, Turtleneck

2. The New Garconne: How to Be a Modern Gentlewoman by Navaz Batliwalla

The New Garconne: How to be a Modern Gentlewoman via Amazon

Navaz Batliwalla is a “stylist, fashion reporter, and the blogger behind Disney Roller Girl,” and this book about androgynous fashion is right up any style fanatic’s street!

I love the neutral color palette of this cover, so I incorporated it into a look including some masculine pieces with feminine details. The silk shirt is a personal favorite item!

Products: Shirt, Bag, Jeans, Shoes

3. Swing Time by Zadie Smith

Swing Time via Amazon

Zadie Smith has been a name on my radar for a while, thanks to her previous bestselling novels. I love the font on the cover of this book, as well as the bold colors. (The reviews aren’t bad either.)

Channel this soon-to-be bestseller with this amazing yellow coat, and don’t forget a red lip! Go for basic black elsewhere for the right amount of balance.

Products: Lipstick, Coat, Dress, Shoes, Bag

What do you think?

Do you like these outfits? Do you fancy any of these books? What’s your favorite book of all time? What should I read when I get the chance? Let me know in the comments!
