If you’re skipping the theme songs, you’re missing out on some serious fashion inspiration!

We all know how a TV show’s opening is immediately recognizable. You can’t hear The Rembrandt’s “I’ll Be There For You” and not think of Friends, right?

A show’s theme song is incredibly important, and the images even more so. Opening credits, when they’re good, tell us a little bit about the story, without giving too much away.

They can also be a great source of fashion inspiration. There’s already a great deal of thought behind them, and since they’re all about the visuals, they’re a great (yet unexpected) place to take your own inspiration from!

So here, I’ve picked a few intros from various shows and created outfits inspired by them. And, if you normally skip the opening credits of a show (I’m looking at you, Orange is the New Black), the next time you’re on a Netflix binge, why not let them run and get inspired yourself?

1. Stranger Things

I couldn’t talk about television without mentioning the show of the summer. Streaming on Netflix, Stranger Things is, without a doubt, the most talked about, hyped show of the past year. And for good reason! Although only 8 episodes long, it truly is a great watch, and if you haven’t already, you need to get into it.

Its theme perfectly sets the tone for the show without giving anything away (so no spoilers if you haven’t watched it!). It’s very ’80s, a little bit creepy, and fits the show’s vibe perfectly.

Channel it with a similar color palette of red and black. Velvet was big in the ’80s, so channel the synth-heavy soundtrack with this red velvet top. Add matching accessories, including these sparkly red earrings to mimic the neon of the lettering. This outfit is perfect for a night out, but perhaps not for the Upside Down.

Products: Top, Jeans, Earrings, Bag, Shoes

2. Pretty Little Liars

Pretty Little Liars may be coming to an end next year (sob), but its legacy lives on with its opening credits and that song. I swear, when I first started watching PLL, I think I was about 14, and the theme song really creeped me out. Maybe I’m just easily scared, but I still find it eerie to this day.

The PLL opening is all about black, so follow the Liars’ lead with an all black ensemble, including this amazing cape. Pretty Little Liars is also all about the mystery, and for some reason hat always = mysterious to me, so I added one to this outfit.

Add comfy ankle boots and a good sized bag, and you’ve got a perfect outfit for a day of classes! And don’t forget to accessorize with the infamous pink nail polish. I mean, if it’s good enough for, uh, a dead body…

Products: Dress, Boots, Cape, Nail Polish, Bag, Hat

3. Mad Men

Personally, Mad Men has one of my favorite opening themes of all time. As a media student, I really love all the symbolism behind it. It really tells a story without doing much, and it’s so well done.

Since Mad Men is all about the workplace, this outfit is perfect for any professional situation you find yourself in, whether that be a job interview, an internship, or maybe you’re just fed up with turning up to class in leggings.

Channel the silhouette’s suit with a tie-neck blouse and black pants, and follow the black, white and red color scheme by adding a bright red bag.

Products: Blouse, Shoes, Pants, Bag

What do you think?
