Let’s Talk Fashion

Who or what inspires your style? “That’s a hard one. Basically I’m more into French and Italian Vogue. I love things that are more avant-garde. I just don’t like fitting in… and I look up to models like Tyra Banks and Ms. J.”

Where do you like to shop? “I normally shop on Amazon, but if I see something cute, I’ll just get it. I also sometimes go to thrift shops because that’s where I can get the best combinations, because when I go [shopping], I like wearing a variety of clothes. So I don’t want to go somewhere expensive where I can only get two or three things. I’d rather go to a thrift shop and get lots of unique things.”

How would you describe your sense of style? “So… I would say kind of over-the-top or a little bit extra. I always like it when something seems a little ‘off’ but still makes sense.”

Why did you choose this particular outfit? “I chose this outfit because I wanted something ‘wow’ and the sun is out so I wanted something that would work for warmer weather. I also really like complementary colors and contrasts, so for this [look] I [knew] that black and white stripes go well with an accent piece, so I put them together.”

What fashion advice would you give others looking to improve their style? “Basically I would say that fashion and developing a personal style takes practice. You have to keep trying. I always see people on campus and I feel like they don’t try. [With the] little effort you put in, [it can make] a difference. You can just look for colors that you like, for a style that you like, and just hit it! I look at my body and my style and look at what would make me look and feel my best. And as time goes on your style will change anyway so don’t be afraid of change.”

What are your favorite trends right now? “Chokers! I love chokers. I feel like they just draw attention to your neck in a fun way and give off a vibe that I really like. I like high-waisted things because they’re super figure-flattering. That, and knee-high boots and off-the-shoulder tops.”

What do you do for fun? Do you have any unique hobbies or interests? “I like fashion, I love theater, I love science, and cooking. I’m so sick of cafeteria food, so [I like] to cook a traditional dish from Ghana called jollof.”

Elements of Carl’s Outfit

1. Black, White, and Bold

Although trends come and go, there are some staple combos that will always remain. Black, white, and red form a timeless mix that offers an air of elegance and grace to any outfit. Carl combines these colors with this on-trend crop top and fitted skirt which gives the traditional combination a refreshing rejuvenation.

2. Mod Bob

Spring is on the way with an influx of soft, bohemian hairdos, but why not take a page out of Carl’s book and dare to be different? Instead of beachy waves, Carl rocks a sharp bob. College is all about change and learning about yourself. Now is the prime time to experiment with new styles, haircuts, and new ways of expression.
