Do you remember going to the library as a child? What kind of books did you like to read? Some of us reached for fantasy, while others dashed towards science fiction. But no matter your genre of choice, Madeleine L’Engle‘s A Wrinkle in Time probably made its way into your hands.

First published in the 1960s, the Newbury Medal-winning novel was the first in a series of tales about the adventurous and talented Murry family. While the main protagonist of the series is arguably Meg, her siblings and parents are main characters in their own novels. The books are some of Madeleine L’Engle’s best known works, but she was much more prolific than most people realize. (See her Amazon page for a full list of works.)

L’Engle was an American writer whose career spanned from the 1940s until her death in 2007 at the age of 88. She wrote mostly young adult fiction, but played around with many different genres, including science fiction, fantasy, realistic, and Biblical.

L’Engle’s work has lasted throughout the decades and inspired generations through her novels. So turn on the tesseract and let’s take a magical journey into fashion inspiration based on Madeleine L’Engle’s work.

Meet the Austins

Many of L’Engle’s novels had a supernatural or science fiction component to them, but The Austin Series stood out for being set in the real world. These books follow the adolescence of a girl named Vicky Austin and depict the ups and downs of her family life.

The first book is a series of anecdotes about the young children of the family. Combine childhood with more mature themes like the book does with a loose tank and some easy shorts with a structured denim jacket and shiny plimsolls.

A Wrinkle in Fashion

The Wrinkle in Time series explores different places, time periods, and planets throughout the universe. Through it all the characters try to save themselves, each other, and the world.

For a fresh look that works in a variety of settings, combine a beautiful sundress and some tall black boots. To keep the outfit from being too sleek, throw on a different colored neutral bag and a gold bracelet set.

Turn Back Time

Many of L’Engle’s books take place in the past, so why not use their settings as vintage inspiration? There are plenty of vintage patterns and trends that are making their way back this season.

This dress has a ’70s vibe with its tropical print; it’s perfect for a summer vacation when paired with these basic sandals. Slip on some old-fashioned hoop earrings and a bomber jacket that looks trendy yet vintage. Finally, take one of these adorable instant cameras for a fun jaunt!

Murrys Forever

The Murry family, with later ties to the O’Keefe family, is full of smart, loving people with grand potential. They also have a lot on their plate, so for a busy day, take inspiration from the Murrys for your outfit.

Skinny jeans are a staple of a busy morning, as are Converse that are easy to move around in. This top is cute and polished without being too formal, and this backpack is as practical as it is stylish. Finish off your 5 minute look with some beautiful stud earrings and head out the door!

Final Thoughts

Madeleine L’Engle inspired a lot of people during the course of her life. It is amazing that her books continue to inspire today, and I believe they will continue to do so.
