Fashion Inspired by Bonnie and Clyde
No crimes against fashion here.
Even though it’s been more than 50 years since it graced the big screen, Bonnie and Clyde is remembered as much for its fashion as it is for its tale of two starcrossed American outlaws.
Faye Dunaway’s portrayal of Bonnie mixed fabulous style with a badass persona. Her look in the film can be described as tailored and functional with touches of glamorous accessories. She is almost always sporting a scarf around her neck and some sort of hat on top her blonde bob.
Her unique style in this movie has inspired many a fashionista throughout the years, including us! Check out the four outfits below to see how you can rock Bonnie’s style in a modern-day way.
Outfit 1: The Secret Meeting
Bonnie’s sweater and beret combo was an instant classic, and here’s our modern take on that look that still stays true to the character. Start with a cozy knit sweater– this one has short sleeves and comes in a bold, saturated color, similar to Bonnie’s.
To keep it casual and contemporary, pair the sweater with your go-to denim and a pair of pointed-toe loafers. Add a very Bonnie-esque beret in a neutral hue that matches the shoes. For the finishing touch, accessorize with hoop earrings; this pair features a cool “coin” texturing–a subtle nod to the bank robbing duo.
Outfit 2: The Robbery
Throughout the movie, Bonnie is seen wearing skirts and blouses, but this outfit is a comfy version of her style that would work well for a laid-back day where you want to look cozy yet cute.
Grab a chic, tunic-style cowl-neck sweater and a pair of leggings. What I love about these leggings is their unique brown/gray hue–they’ll definitely stand out in a sea of black leggings. Complete the outfit with badass boots and a vintage-look leather satchel.
Outfit 3: The Getaway
This look draws influences from the 1930s film setting, while still keeping up with this decade. A mock-neck ribbed tee works well with this khaki skirt, which has timeless details, like a button front and a tie-up belt.
Keep things current with cutout peep-toe booties, but echo back to Bonnie’s style with her signature silky, printed bandana, worn tied around the neck. Finally, go incognito with big, identity-obscuring sunglasses.
Outfit 4: A Night Out Celebrating
For the final look, Bonnie’s signature black sweater and skirt combo becomes more “today” in the form of a black sleeveless turtleneck dress. Pair with on-trend caged heels and sparkly stud earrings. These studs look like heirloom diamonds, but don’t worry, they’re made of cubic zirconia and totally affordable!
Finally, a tiny pistol charm necklace is a more literal nod to the film without going overboard.
