Hey Callie, be our bestie, please? We really want to raid your wardrobe.

Callie, a junior at West Virginia University, caught my eye in one of the busiest places on campus, the 5th floor of Evansdale Crossings. Her fashionable girl-next-door aesthetic made her stand out despite the heavy foot traffic weaving in and out around us.

Callie’s outfit is the perfect example of springtime style yet is seasonably appropriate for the cool winter breeze that has continued to linger around campus. Check it out below:

Let’s Talk Fashion

Who or what inspires your style? “Swedish and French [styles are] mostly what inspires me. I go on Pinterest a lot and just type in ‘Swedish street style.’ I love that they have capsule wardrobes of very versatile and practical items. Practicality is what I’m striving for right now. I’m trying to clean out my closet and get it narrowed down to only my favorite items.”

Where do you like to shop? “I shop at H&M, Old Navy, T.J. Maxx, and Goodwill mostly. If I had more money I would shop at Anthropologie and Olive Clothing. I love Olive Clothing. I would like to be able to eventually only go shopping once every few months for clothes or once a season to get the necessary items. These items would be more expensive though and last longer. [That] way [I would] not [be] buying fast fashion stuff that doesn’t last.”

How would you describe your sense of style? “My sense of style is all over the place. I like to be edgy sometimes, other times very classic and practical, and other days I want to look like the artsy cool girl. It’s just whatever I’m in the mood for or have time for in the morning. Usually I don’t have much time so I wear very minimal makeup and just throw on something simple.”

Why did you choose this particular outfit? “This outfit was chosen because it’s a mix of my favorite clothing items. Pointed flats are my outfit staple in the spring and summer. The ripped boyfriend jeans are comfortable and cute and I would totally wear them every day. The sweater is cute and comfortable on its own but looks cooler with a button-up layered under it. These items are my favorite because they can be mixed and matched with the rest of my wardrobe so easily.”

What fashion advice would you give other students looking to improve their style? “My advice is to be yourself and be comfortable. Also don’t be afraid to wear something you think is weird; just wear it if you like it!”

What is your favorite trend right now? “My favorite trend is high waisted jeans. I only wear high waisted jeans. Also overalls — I’m still looking for a pair of overalls for myself that don’t cost a million dollars. I’m hoping I’ll find some cool old ones at Goodwill soon.”

Do you have any favorite fashion designers? If so, who? “I don’t have any specific designers in mind – maybe Gucci? Gucci stuff is cool and I would definitely have one full outfit if I could. I follow a photographer @Sarahbahbah on Instagram and she did a photoshoot for Gucci recently. Those pictures are definitely the high-fashion vibe I would go for.”

What do you do for fun – do you have any unique hobbies or interests? “I love to paint and make any kind of art. When I have time, I like to go camping and do anything outside.”

If you could raid anyone’s closet, who would it be and why? “I follow the model Gigi Mae Ringel on Instagram, @gigiringel and I would definitely raid her closet. She has very cool, very Italian style. She always looks sophisticated, cool, and effortless. I get so much inspiration on Instagram. I follow more art, fashion, and food people than friends!”

 Elements of Callie’s Outfit

1. Turtleneck Sweater and White Dress Shirt

This sweater is the perfect twist on the traditional turtleneck sweater. Not only is it great for a chilly spring day, but it is sophisticated when paired with a white dress shirt underneath. Callie purchased her dress shirt at H&M, one of our favorite cheap clothing stores. I love the turtleneck tied at the front, as it really showcases her dress shirt which contrasts against both her knitted sweater and distressed jeans. Bonus, this sweater even has adorable pockets!

2. Distressed Blue Jeans

I think these are the sweetest distressed blue jeans, another great buy from H&M. I have always searched for a pair of ripped jeans that I can dress up or down. These jeans have the perfect amount of distressing to keep Callie warm from any chilly breeze while complementing her entire outfit. She also rolled her skinny jeans just above the ankle to showcase her cute ballet flats.

 3. Warby Parker Glasses

I am obsessed with accessories, especially prescription glasses. As a permanent accessory for Callie, her glasses (from Warby Parker) add to her overall vibe and style. I love these big glasses and thick frames which suit her well.

4. Pointed Ballet Flats

One of my favorite parts of seeking style on campus is looking at the shoes! Even Callie refers to these as an absolute staple for spring and summer. Again, another basic piece with a fun twist.

5. Silver Rings

Callie’s killing the jewelry game. It goes without saying that her engagement ring is breathtakingly beautiful. Her other ring, however, cannot go unnoticed. She purchased it for a steal of $13 dollars at a festival hosted in her hometown – who would have guessed?
