Casual and cool.

I spotted Rachel hanging out between classes. Whenever I see her on campus or at Young Life activities, I’m always inspired by her outfits.

Ideal for a windy spring day, Rachel’s outfit mixes a little bit of everything. While her pants are business casual, her shirt and jacket are inherently relaxed. While it’s tricky to wear such a variety of styles and manage to look coherent, Rachel has nailed this mix-and-match look.

Let’s Talk Fashion

Who or what inspires your style? “For inspiration I love following trendy bloggers on Instagram, YouTube, and Pinterest. I love looking to see what is always going to be the next trend [and how] others style their outfits. Also, I get inspiration from my friends. They all have great fashion sense[s] and they are always giving me ideas.”

Where do you like to shop? “I love shopping at Forever 21, Target, Altar’d State, American Eagle, H&M, Old Navy, and Free People. I also have started shopping at Buckle, due to the fact that I work there. As much as I know I shouldn’t shop at these fast fashion stores, I’m ballin’ on a budget.”

How would you describe your sense of style? “I have noticed describing my style is one of the hardest things. I like to think [that] I am all over the place and always down to try new styles. [Recently I asked] one of my friends how she would describe it and she said it would be ‘trendy conservative,’ which I say is pretty spot on.”

Why did you choose this particular outfit? “I was actually on Pinterest a couple days [ago] and I came upon this picture of a girl at a restaurant that had on [basically] the same shirt and pants. [I thought] it was the cutest thing, so I had to recreate the outfit.”

What fashion advice would you give other students looking to improve their style? “My advice to students who want to improve their style is to have confidence in what you are wearing. One of my life mottos is ‘look good, feel good.’ If you think you look good, you will feel great! But if you feel uncomfortable in whatever you are wearing, then don’t, because then you will be uncomfortable for the rest of the day.”

What is your favorite trend right now? “Denim on denim! I am obsessed with it at the moment. I own way too many denim jackets and they are perfect to style in the spring with a cute graphic tee and a trendy pair of jeans. I have always been a fan of it. [I support] denim on denim.”

Do you have any favorite fashion designers? If so, who? “Oh, gosh! There are so many designers that I love, but a couple semesters ago I did a project on Céline and I fell in love with their clothing. Phoebe Philo did amazing things [with] the company. I just love everything that she makes. Also, I have been obsessed with Chloé. I am dying to get my hands on the Chloé Faye small backpack; it is literally the cutest thing ever. Hopefully later in life I can afford it.”

What do you do for fun – do you have any unique hobbies or interests? “When I am not busy with school or work, I am normally leading. I am a Young Life leader at University High School right here in Morgantown. I was placed as a leader at the end of 2016 and it has been one of the biggest blessing[s] of college. If you are looking for me on Sunday, Monday, and Wednesday nights I will be at a Young Life events and also some other days of the weeks I’ll be at sporting event[s] or just hanging out with some girls. Also, when I just need ‘me’ time, I love just going to Target and walking around and seeing what is new and buying things that I do not need at all. I’m also on of the biggest Friends fan. I am constantly watching it!”

If you could raid anyone’s closet, who would it be and why? “100% Taylor Hill. She has been my favorite model for years now and her fashion sense is to die for. She has the best model off-duty look that is very simple but really fashionable. I would love to raid her closet.”

Elements of Rachel’s Outfit

1. Sherpa-Lined Denim Jacket

Rachel’s sherpa-lined denim jacket is from Forever 21. Not only did she successfully recreate the outfit she saw on Pinterest by topping off her look with a jacket, but she is ready for all the variations spring weather has to offer.

2. High-Rise Pants

Rachel’s grey pants immediately grabbed my attention. I love everything about these patterned pants, from the fit to the length. They can be dressed up or down; either way, Rachel’s outfit is sure to be a show-stopper.

3. Logo Tee

This classic t-shirt from Buckle is the perfect throw-on with high-rise trousers or mom jeans. There’s no better way to style a graphic tee than by rocking the classic tucked in look.

4. Adidas Superstar Sneakers

These Adidas Superstars are every ’90s fashion fan’s dream! The sneakers are a classic style (seriously, you can wear them with any outfit this season) and they perfectly complement Rachel’s aesthetic.

5. Backpack

Rachel’s simple, yet sleek and stylish Herschel Supply Co. backpack complements her overall look so nicely. I insisted that Rachel kept it on for the picture because I think it is always an added bonus when your entire outfit and backpack are cohesive.
