I’ve got major pants envy. Tyrah’s pants were the first thing I noticed about her look from afar (how could you not?!). Upon chatting with her and seeing her style up close, I noticed her strong attention to detail. Tyrah’s outfit is elegantly crafted to complement and not overwhelm her statement pants. Well done, T. Let’s Talk Fashion
Who or what inspires your style? “I guess… this is really hard… I guess like just whatever like I’m in the mood [for]! Because I don’t have a set style like today I feel kinda boho-ish. But I switch it up real fast. Like one day I could be a tomboy and the next day… [it] just depends on my mood. I’m never really into what’s in style. I just do my own thing.”
Where do you like to shop? “I love thrifting! So like Goodwill and Salvation Army, Forever 21, H&M, Charlotte Russe… places that I can afford.”
How would you describe your sense of style? “I call it ‘sophisticated-sexy.'”
Why did you choose this particular outfit? “I didn’t feel like ironing today and so I just saw some palazoo pants. It’s like sunny outside too, so I was like ‘I’ll just wear something cute and comfortable.'”
What fashion advice would you give to other students looking to improve their style? “Just do you, ’cause in fashion there’s no right or wrong. Old styles are coming back. So yeah, just do you. There’s no rules. Don’t try to fit in with everybody and what else they wearing. I just do what I can afford and dress it up. Like, I’ll take one simple black dress and dress it up 20 different ways.”
What are your favorite fashion trends right now? “Chokers! I’m obsessed with chokers. I’m also really into African wear right now, like dashikis and earrings. Those are the two.”
Do you have any favorite fashion designers? If so who? “A lot of the designers I model for are not known yet but… I don’t have a favorite designer but I do have a favorite boutique. So Meow & Barks boutique. Her stuff is absolutely amazing, like you will not find it anywhere else. She’s dope.”
Do you have any unique hobbies or interests? “I love going to spoken word events, fashion shows, [and] stuff like that. I like to go to the movies [and] shopping of course. I model, I don’t know if that [is] a hobby. And I sing!”
If you could raid anyone’s closet, who would it be and why? “Top three people are Rihanna, Keke Palmer, and Zendaya.”
Elements of Tyrah’s Outfit
1. Earthy Stone Choker
I really love this small choker. Tyrah got is as a gift from a fashion designer that she modeled for… how lucky is she? Sometimes the smallest touches can tie a look together. Without this choker, I feel like her outfit would have been missing something. Tyrah has a great eye for the details.
2. Palazzo Pants
Like myself, Tyrah is a fellow thrifter which is where she got these pants. It’s undeniable: they are the star of her outfit. The colors are bold and the shape is incredibly flattering.
3. Denim Jacket
Everyone needs a classic denim jacket in their closet. No matter what outfit you’re wearing, a denim jacket will always complement your look. Make sure you’re wearing an equally cute top, just in case you want to take your jacket off!
