Looks on Campus: Yan Ni – University of Massachusetts Lowell
Workwear at its finest.
With internship season right around the corner, Yan Ni’s professional look is sure to give you major fashion inspiration. Her statement pants perfectly complement her sophisticated style.
Yan Ni is full of great style advice, but my favorite tidbit she shared with me is, “It’s easy to wear something you already own! You probably have business casual sweaters or tops in your closet; you just have to pair them with work-appropriate pants.” A lot of us don’t have closets full of professional pants, but having a staple pair or two would go a long way.
The most important thing she’s wearing? Confidence!

Let’s Talk Fashion
Who or what inspires your style? “I like Blake Lively. I [discovered her style after] binge watching Gossip Girl on Netflix. I follow Karlie Kloss a lot [too].”
Where do you like to shop? “For business casual [looks], I like to shop at Express and New York & Company. I don’t go shopping as much as I want to.”
How would you describe your sense of style? “Depends on the day! At work I have to dress business casual. I try to stick with sweaters, neutral colors, and dress pants. I am also a big fan of athleisure.”
Why did you choose this particular outfit? “These are my go-to work shoes. I bought them specifically for work because they are comfortable. I wear these pants because I get a lot of compliments on them. I usually wear a neutral or black sweater [with them].”
What fashion advice would you give students looking to improve their style? “Wear something that you feel good in. I definitely feel more confident when I like my outfit.”
What are your favorite trends right now? “I like vertical stripes on pants because they make my legs look longer. I [also] really like scalloped [tops] and I am a big fan of the bralette trend.”
Do you have any favorite fashion designers? If so, who? “Tommy Hilfiger. I like the color scheme of his clothes.”
What do you do for fun – do you have any unique hobbies or interests? “I recently went indoor rock climbing. After grabbing the first [rock] I thought I pulled my arm muscle. It makes you use all of the muscles in your forearm that you didn’t know you have! This [winter] I started snowboarding. I bought a snowboard to force myself to go more often because I know I like it. I joined the ski and snowboard club at school so I will have people to go with.”
If you could raid anyone’s closet who would it be and why? “Probably one of the Kardashians because I have seen pictures of their closets and they are huge! They have everything that you could ever need.”
Elements of Yan Ni’s Outfit
1. Plaid Pants
The bright white stripes on these black pants add a fun pattern while balancing out Yan Ni’s overall cool-toned look. Bonus: The skinny fit of these pants allows her to show off her favorite black pumps.
2. Navy Blue Peacoat
A peacoat is perfect to layer over a business casual look like this. Its clean structure and wrinkle-free appearance keep her outfit looking sharp. Plus, staying warm in New England is always a priority.
3. Black Pumps
Yan Ni searched for weeks before finding the perfect pair of work shoes. She knew her hunt was over when she found these retro heels at Macy’s. Not only are they professional, but they are also comfortable… an added bonus for class-to-internship days.
