My Favorite Celebrity Looks of Summer 2016

These are the ensembles I drooled over this summer, worn by some of my top girl crushes.

This summer, we’ve seen some huge pop culture events, from blockbuster movie releases to Hiddleswift to “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.” And of course, summer also brings annual events like the Cannes Film Festival and Comic Con. One of my favorite parts of tuning into celebrity happenings is, of course, seeing what they wear.

As summer 2016 comes to a close, I wanted to take a moment to review some of the summer’s greatest fashion moments, which, appropriately, coincided with the season’s top moments in culture and entertainment. I always say that a big part of wearing a great outfit is what you do in it — you know you still remember what you were wearing at some of the biggest moments in your life.

These five celebs slayed on red carpets, at premieres, and at interviews, all while living their best life and continuing to remind the world of their #girlboss status.

1. Blake Lively at Cannes

Blake Lively is undeniably the reigning queen of summer fashion. This year, she has had some of the best red carpet AND street style looks, while oh yeah, also being pregnant. And one of my favorite things about Blake is that she is one of the few starlets in Hollywood who does all her styling herself, and she comes out looking better than everyone. It proves that no one knows your style better than, well, you. And I guess it doesn’t hurt that every designer wants to dress her.

Her repertoire at Cannes in May was as incredible as always, but this Vivienne Westwood princess gown was undoubtedly my favorite. From the ruffles to the pastel hue to the embellishment, it’s the kind of feminine, show-stopping dress that I dream of wearing.

2. and 3.  Leslie Jones and Melissa McCarthy at the “Ghostbusters” premiere

First of all, the whole cast of the all-lady “Ghostbusters” obviously slayed on the red carpet at the premiere. But Leslie Jones and Melissa McCarthy were my faves.

Leslie made headlines a few weeks before the premiere when she tweeted her frustration at the lack of designers that wanted to dress her. Christian Siriano, hero of body positivity, quickly tweeted back that he was totally game.

I couldn’t have loved the final result more. Normally, I get a little bored with seeing actresses in go-to red on the red carpet. Not so with this perfectly fitted, perfectly styled ensemble. It was so genius that, after all the conversation, Leslie came out proving that a tall, non-sample-size woman of color can be the perfect vision of old Hollywood glamour. The only response I have is YASSSSS.

We already knew Melissa McCarthy was a fashion whiz, since she’s a super successful designer herself and is always game for taking risks on the red carpet. But this sunny number is without a doubt my all-time favorite of her looks.

Her Judy B. Swartz dress combines several of my favorite things: sheer panels, bright yellow, pretty florals, and a fabulously flouncy fit-and-flare shape. Plus, the red lip and flowy ombré hair are summery perfection.

4. Vera Farmiga at San Diego Comic Con

Okay, so I am admittedly predisposed to love whatever Vera Farmiga wears, because I am obsessed with her and her role on “Bates Motel,” as I have gushed about on CF before.

Biases aside, though, this casual ensemble that Vera rocked at the “Bates” panel at Comic Con is personal style perfection (see the full look here). Comic Con is all about being fun and quirky, and Vera let that side of her personality come out in this adorable heart-print sweater, paired with a very on-trend combo of a tie-neck blouse and wide-leg pants.

Plus, shoutout to my fellow blue-eyed ladies, a bold pink shade like this blouse (and ingenious matching lip), will really make your eyes pop. It’s all about the jewel tones!

5 (and bonus!). BOTH of J.K. Rowling’s looks at the opening night of “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child”

Obviously, J. K. Rowling can do anything, including slay an event with her fashion game.

She rocked two looks on the evening of July 30, the official opening of the “Cursed Child” play. Plus, when the clock struck midnight, the script book was released around the world and it was Jo’s birthday! Fabulous outfits were obviously in order.

Her red-carpet dress was simple and classic, but her accessories stole the show (click here to see them close up) with their nods to the magical world. If her blingy, Slytherin-esque snake ring wasn’t enough, she also chose too-cool, winged Sophia Webster sandals.

After the show, she got all glammed up to usher in July 31, the birthday she shares with Harry himself. Her off-the-shoulder black number was simultaneously classic and modern, and her sparkly earrings and sandals complemented it perfectly (see a more detailed pic here). For a pop of pattern, she held on to the same embellished clutch she rocked with her red carpet ensemble.

Slay on, queen.
