Looks on Campus: Hattie – Kansas State University

Hattie’s not in Kansas anymore.

Hattie, a senior at the Kansas State University, took a leap of faith this summer and moved to New York City. With her strong passion for fashion, she says she is always keeping up on the latest trends.

Her outfit successfully incorporates many must-have summer pieces, but stays practical with her choice of neutral colors. I’ve had a pleated skirt sitting in my closet for a while and been unsure how to wear it, but Hattie has inspired me to pair it with a cropped sweater!

Let’s Talk Fashion

Who or what inspires your style? “Street style really inspires what I choose to wear. I like taking an accessory idea or a piece from another person’s look and transforming it into my own. I love seeing people wear things that are super cool and innovative. Surf style really intrigues me and every now and then I like to wear islander/Polynesian prints for the summer.”

Where do you like to shop? “Right now, my favorite brands are probably Urban Outfitters and Zara. If you look in my closet, I also enjoy shopping at Express, Brandy Melville, Free People, American Eagle, and Tobi. I love discounts. Wherever the sale is at the time, I follow it and shop there.”

How would you describe your sense of style? “I feel like my sense of style is constantly changing. I’d like to describe my style as [minimalist], edgy, and chic.”

Why did you choose this particular outfit?
“It’s [fashion industry] corporate and comfortable. I also like neutral colors: black and white.”

What fashion advice would you give to other students looking to improve their style? “This is going to sound cliché, but don’t be afraid to take risks! I have to tell myself this all the time. I always want to buy things that are generic and easy to match with other pieces, but when you do that all the time, your style can become so dull.”

What are your favorite trends right now?
“I’m definitely a fan of the cold shoulder! I also love the overalls and jumpsuit trend[s].”

What do you do for fun – do you have any unique hobbies or interests?

“I love photography and I love to travel. There are so many more places I want to go and take pictures of. I also write and illustrate for my school’s newspaper, and I’ve recently started a fashion blog.”

If you could raid anyone’s closet, who would it be? “I would love to raid the closets of Rihanna, Monica Rose, and Sarah Jessica Parker.”

Elements of Hattie’s Outfit

1. Pleated Skirt and Lace-Up Sandals

Hattie incorporated some of summer’s top trends into her city chic outfit. First, pleated midi skirts have been all the rage in 2016. Her high-low black and white skirt is ultra flattering and versatile. If you haven’t noticed, lace-up sandals have also been everywhere, and Hattie’s neutral flats are perfect for wearing everywhere, with everything.

2. Cropped Sweater

To keep cozy in a cold office but avoid sweltering on a hot day, Hattie wore a long sleeve cropped sweater. With its neutral color and added texture, it perfectly compliments the colors of her pleated skirt. As she stated before, taking risks is necessary to keep your style from becoming dull, and she definitely practices what she preaches!
